What Does an Insurance Adjuster Do?

We realize that not everyone lives and breathes insurance everyday like we do, so we like to take some time now and then to explain some "Insurance 101" items to ensure clients are as educated as possible when it comes to making decisions on insurance.

At this time of year, typically due to Florida storms causing damage to our homes, there are a larger number of insurance claims than normal. One of the individuals who you will likely get to know in that scenario is an insurance adjuster (also known as a claims adjuster), whose job it is to investigate your claim and determine the possible payout by your insurance company to cover damages, injuries, etc.

Many adjusters investigate your claim by visiting your property; in person, viewing and documenting losses and damages personally. These investigations can also include interviews of witnesses to the damage, or police reports, if applicable.

After doing their due diligence around the claim, the adjuster will determine how much the insurance company should pay for the damages. Once the claim is approved by the carrier, the adjuster will also work with you directly to settle the claim. If you disagree with the settlement offer from the carrier, the adjuster may also get involved with attorneys and expert witnesses to defend the insurer. That is, if the adjuster is an independent or staff adjuster, hired by the insurance company to investigate the claim.

There are, however, public adjusters who can represent you - the insured - for a fee… typically 5-20% of the final settlement amount. This option may make sense if your loss is significant (over $10,000).

All insurance adjusters in Florida - regardless of type - must be licensed by the Florida Department of Financial Services to practice legally. You can use that same website to verify an adjuster's license status before working with them.

In the end, it is every adjuster's goal to close claims as quickly as possible and come to a settlement resolution, regardless of who they are working for.
