Choosing Auto Liability Limits: How much is enough?

If you've ever worked with Wren Insurance Agency to secure auto insurance, you may have noticed that we quote bodily injury liability starting at $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident (also known as "100/300 coverage"), while Florida only requires $10,000/$20,000 for this coverage.

Why do we start at this amount vs. starting at Florida’s minimum requirement? It's for your protection.

As a protection-minded agency, we want to help ensure our clients have enough protection to handle the challenges that may come their way. If you think about the cost of just a single individual spending several days in the hospital, undergoing possible surgery and rehabilitative care, the out-of-pocket costs can easily exceed tens of thousands of dollars. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, the average cost of a single individual receiving hospitalization care after an accident is $57,000. Then add to that the possibility of a group of people getting hurt in an accident (versus just one person) and how quickly those medical bills can easily skyrocket well above six figures. The liability involved with a significant event is enough to bankrupt many, unfortunately.

Knowing this, we start quoting at 100/300. While not much more expensive than 10/20, 100/300 can significantly reduce expenses tied to auto accidents for the insured. From our perspective, it's well worth the extended coverage to have peace of mind.

Is 100/300 enough? While 100/300 is much more than Florida requires, it still may not be enough for a significant accident with injuries or death. For this reason, you may still wish to purchase additional coverage – in the amount of $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident (also known as 250/500). Additionally, you can purchase Umbrella insurance, which will provide you with additional liability in increments of millions of dollars. You never know how much you will need for any particular accident, so it’s better to be prepared with umbrella coverage, if you can afford it.

Of course, we sincerely hope our clients never get into a serious automobile accident, but unfortunately things happen and it's our job to help ensure you're as prepared as you can possibly be.
